Large IDN Standardizes to Single Enterprise Smart Pump Drug Library in Under 6 Weeks

Study Overview

Situation

An 18-hospital system in the Northeast needed to consolidate its infusion pump drug libraries in order to implement a new system-wide infusion pump fleet and subsequently prepare for go-live on electronic health record (EHR) interoperability.

Business Case & Findings

Pharmacy, Nursing, and IT Leadership required a solution to drive consolidation and standardize on a single enterprise drug library within a limited 6-week timeframe. The 18-hospital system was using multiple libraries consisting of 9,300+ entries.

Results

Bainbridge Health utilized its Med O.S.® platform and national network benchmarks to drive consensus among a multi-disciplinary project team and deliver a single evidence-based and network-informed drug library within 6 weeks. The system was successfully able to roll out its new pump fleet and achieve its interoperability goals.

Situation

An 18 hospital, 3,400+ bed health system in the Northeast needed to consolidate its infusion pump drug libraries in order to implement a new enterprise-wide infusion pump fleet and subsequently prepare for go-live on electronic health record (EHR) interoperability.  The system had 6 drug libraries in use consisting of 9,300+ entries across a multi-vendor smart infusion pump fleet and required a single, standard drug library.

Business Case

The system partnered with Bainbridge Health to help drive a number of objectives:

  • Consolidate 6 drug libraries into a single library compatible for pump/EHR interoperability.
  • Leverage hospital-specific practice data and Bainbridge Health’s national network benchmarks to drive and develop buy-in for standardization decisions.
  • Complete the library consolidation process within 6-weeks in order to accept delivery of new infusion pumps.

Intervention & Impact

Bainbridge Health applied its Med O.S.® platform, national benchmark data, and supportive clinical evidence to:

  • Perform a comprehensive analysis and alignment of 6 libraries consisting of 9,300+ drug library line items across 53 care areas.
  • Lead bi-weekly meetings with increasing frequency towards project completion for detailed review and optimization.
  • Cross-reference proposed IV pump library configurations with the EHR to ensure consistency, focusing on aligning concentrations, dose units, and administration parameters.
  • Integrate pharmacists, nursing informatics, medication safety specialists, and nursing educators to validate and finalize the optimized library.
  • Ultimately provide a comprehensive, interop-ready drug library supported by evidence-based and national network benchmarks.

In less than six weeks, the health system successfully launched a single, standardized infusion pump drug library enterprise-wide in advance of their implementation deadline. Through this initiative, the team:

  • Streamlined library entries from 9,300 to approximately 4,800
  • Achieved the first hospital go-live in less than one month following library finalization and subsequently completed an enterprise, multi-state roll-out of the new infusion pump fleet
  • Kicked off a successful project plan for interoperability between infusion pumps and the EHR
